Wikipedia tells us that “A crumble is a dish of British origin containing stewed fruit topped with a crumbly mixture of fat (usually butter), flour, and sugar. The crumble is baked in an oven until the topping is crisp. It is often served with custard, cream or ice cream as a hearty, warm dessert after a meal.”

And reading such a description only makes us want to make one pronto – dont you think? I love the versitality and the simplicity that a crumble or crisp- if you will, offers. I have this amazing recipe from a book “vegetarian” book and which I have modified a wee bit to make a little more nutritious. The topping usually has All purpose flour which I substituted with Whole Wheat pastry flour. Yummy and healthy too.

    Ingredients

  • About 3-4 cooking apples, cored and sliced
  • 1 cup blackberries
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • about 1 tbsp of Orange zest
    For the topping
  • 1 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour,sifted

  • 5 tbsp butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup Hazelnuts, chopped
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder

Method

1.Preheat Oven to 400F. Scatter the apples in a well greased baking dish. Then scatter with blackberries.Top it with orange zest.

2.Now sprinkle the Brown sugar evenly all over the fruit and the pour down the orange juice. Set it aside.

3. Now mix all the ingredients of the topping in another bowl until the mixture starts resembling like coarse bread crumbs.

4.Now scatter this on top of the fruit.

5.Press the topping around the edges to seal in the juices. Bake for 30-35 min or until the crumble is golden. Serve with icecream or vanilla custard. Yum:)
