Eggless Chocolate Cake
How long does it take one to sneeze? Well that’s exactly the time it takes to make this cake!. OK..OK a little more than that :-) . I am not an egg lover but then if in cakes or other baking produce, I don’t mind one. Even then when I first started on to bake my very first cake, i wanted to try with an eggless one and this was it. Very very simple and a good piece to bite on to.I cant promise you that softness which comes with the inclusion of an egg, but its still moist and soft enough to try.This is a Tarla Dalal’s recipe and its sure worth a try.

  • Yields: 1 Cake - 6 " in diameter
Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 cup plain flour (maida)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda bi-carbonate
  • 1/2 can (400 grams for full can) condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
Method
1. Sift the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder and soda bi-carbonate.
2. Combine all the ingredients together with 1/2 cup (100 ml.) of water in a bowl and mix well using a whisk.
3. Pour this mixture into a greased 150 mm. (6") diameter baking tin after greasing it.
4. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180°C (360°F) for 20 minutes or till a knife inserted into the cake comes out clean.
5. Unmould and cool on a wire rack.

My anniversary is next week and I plan to make it... :) I have a question, you said 1/2 can of 400 gm condensed milk. Do you mean 400 ml? Here I got a can of 350ml therefore I am not sure how should I measure if. Also, will it be possible to give the measurement for condensed milk in cups? Thanks, Kushangi

It will just about 1 cup. You can use 1 cup measure for 200 gms

Hi, I wanted an easy chocolate cake and came acroos yours. I made a couple of changes. Used sugar and 2 eggs instead of condensed milk , added a picnh of salt.Also replaced water with milk. hi, loved this cake. I would like to try it out. How many eggs should I use instead of condensed milk. the recipe says to mix in water. can I use milk instead. Also when making blue berry muffins what else can I use as I don't get blue berries in chennai

I can post non eggless version of chocolate cake later on. But for your query purpose, I guess you can substitute eggs for the condensed milk. One egg equals 1/4 cups. So use equal measurement for the liquid. Yes you can use milk for water. I haven't personally used this hence I cannot say if the liquid measures will be appropriate for dry. As for the blueberries - why make blueberry muffins if you don't have blueberries? ;) - there are so many other muffins that you can try instead. Hi Dhivya, When I used Baking powder to Parota, taste was bitter. Not sure whether it's because of baking powder. Can you please confirm whetehr we use baking powder for cakes. bye..

Hi Manjula, Mostly the bitterness of the parotta should not be because of Baking powder . I can see the bitterness in only those cases where you dint use another acidic ingredient like Buttermilk to counter the effects of baking powder. Did you use buttermilk or yogurt in your parotta recipe while using Baking powder? If you did, then I dont know what else could have been the cause of bitterness but if you dint, then surely its baking powder. Using Baking Powder and Soda are v common in baked goods. They help the product to rise and bring out the beautiful texture of the bake. Just make sure that recipes that call for baking powder also use other neutral-tasting ingredients, such as milk, buttermilk etc. Hope this info helps Manjula

Am glad that u like the recipe. Well condensed milk gives the cake a moist texture which am not sure milk can provide.

I have never made a cake without an Oven, so I am unfortunately hard pressed to give a suggestion from personal experience.

No I havent suggested using evaporated milk for condensed milk. I suggested using Unsweetend Condensed milk instead of the sweetened version - to make it less sweet. Hi,you've suggested to replace the condensed milk with evaporated milk is it? By replacing,wont the cupcake be a little bit tasteless cause evaporated milk is not sweet right? and i thought of using whipped cream for the deco. tried making buttercream frosting but it turned out bad. hope you could share one! ;) plan to bake using cupcakes today. going to the beach tomorrow..hope to hear from you soon..thanks again..

I am glad that this recipe worked out for you. Usually this recipe is not that sweet - provided you dint use Sweetened Condensed Milk along with sweetened cocoa powder. Use unsweetened version and U will get a milder flavour in case you want it with less sweet.

Yes do go for cupcake moulds - Try this recipe with unsweetened condensed milk and then make a buttercream frosting! I tried it and its out of this world..its a suggestion - am sure u have more amazing stuff ur sleeve :)

Vanilla is NOT a MUST in the strictest sense but it sure is an value added ingrediant in baking giving that nice aroma and taste..
