Plum Tree

..a plum as most of you guessed rightly. Way to go you green thumbed beings! I will catch up with you all soon enough one day! I mean imagine being taunted and ridiculed by a PLUM! By the way are you ready for some personal Rant? Or may be the correct word is musing!  I know this space has not seen a recipe in last 5 days or so..but I assure you I will be back with one tomorrow.

Plum Tree

Seeing all these plums on a tree just brought back memories! It was a total Deja Vu! Like any typical South Indian family, we are huge in number. I have like large number of cousins, aunts and uncles.

Plum Tree

Though the younger cousins have a lot of cool stuff going on for them, we (my age group cousins), although not per se ‘cool’ had few other special things going for us in those days which is so hard to see nowadays. Till my grandfather was alive, we all had this tradition of visiting them in their hometown for our summer vacation. Just imagine a congregation of around 30-40 ppl from various cities, all flocking together to one point.

Plum Tree

A week of stay at our grandparents palatial home, visiting country side, sucking on countless ripe mangoes sitting in the backyard, drinking coconut water all fresh from a tree (..and that’s one long story for another time), meeting few more relatives – second cousins and the like, and then packing once more. No not to return but to go for ‘real’ vacation this time. My grandfather had the privilege of staying at a Guest house on “our” hill station ( for a long time when I was young I took it for granted that Kodai was our hill station!!!) which we returned to every year. The summer heat made bearable by misty clouds right on top of the hills, innumerable number of roses and plants – and if that’s not enough we had a personalized Chef to pamper us with scrummy food!

Plum Tree

“Now wait a minute – I am confused! Where does Plums come here”-You ask! Yes I am coming to that. On the slopes of the hill amongst immense greenery there also used to be a Plum tree! Me and my cousins have had some beautiful moments plucking up the fruit right from the tree and eating it pronto ( I dont even know if we cared enough to wash those things!) sitting under it and talking so many meaningless things which meant a lot to us! That sure seems to have made a lot of impression on my mind – I mean how else can I explain that sudden fast beating heart of mine the minute I realized what I was seeing was a Plum tree!

Plum Tree

My younger cousins dint have these moments – they are really a  ‘cool’, very smart  and hep bunch of dudes and dudettes, but then I can say with assurance that a Plum tree will not matter as much to them as much as it did to me! And thats the way the cookie crumbles!

  1. Beautiful memories put so beautifully! :-)

  2. You are really Lucky, Dahling-You had a great childhood. I also agree with Madhuram.Anyway lets take life as it comes .Enjoy the plums

Yeah, it was fun while it lasted – now we all are scattered across the world and bc with our own lives! But as you said, I will njoy the plums and have a happy smile on my lips thinking of those moments! :) We all have them, sometime or the other but it takes small things like these to remind us to take a minute, sit back and relive those special moments!

  3. How lovely Dhivi..you very lucky…enjoy your fruits..:)..but they look more like an apple to me in the size!..maybe you can put them for the size difference?..:))

    I will do that Valli…

  4. My husband and myself were lucky enough to grow around grandparents (actually we lived with them) and I really feel sorry for my son Dhivi. He is longing for both his grandmothers. Each and every time he sees them on the computer screen he keeps calling them, asking them to come here. Ennamo life po!

I know exactly what you mean – I know we both are too young to say ‘ennamo andha kalathulla…..’ but seemingly things are like this nowadays!

  5. Man, Dhivi, that brought back so many memories! It really is the simple things in life that mean so much… Have a great time enjoying your fabulous plums, girl! :)

  6. Yeah, I was right…and I am honored to have the title“Demeter” .

..yes u were and I am happy to bestow that to you too :)
