Low Calorie Banana Chocolate Brownie Recipe
If you thought this post is accompanied with pictures taken in very 'low enthusiasm', I have to admit, that you are right! They look like the half hearted attempt at taking pictures which I assure you is the way I took it. Now, the explanation behind it is another story altogether!. I have choco-monster for a friend. And she came home. Period. What? wasn't that an explanation enough? Do you even dare to assume that a choco monster would let me take pictures of a chocolate Brownie? I mean - seriously, you assume too much I say! ;) So this sweet choco-monster (I seem to have all these monsters for friends - I have one cheesecake monster, one eggo-monster and this choco-monster! I think I have some kinda monster magnetism going on about me! Umm..) suddenly is on a diet, a diet which includes avoiding chocolates too! I mention that cos I have seen her diets which commands her to abstain from so and so but somehow conveniently always includes chocolates (and lots of them I might add ;)). With such a predicament, I told her this is one brownie she is going to love. After calling me severe names I dread to publish here for the fear of young kids chancing upon it, she asked me why I am so hard on her.
Low Calorie Banana Chocolate Brownie Recipe
I said, listen to these key words - These brownies are "Simple", "Damn Easy to Make", " Low Calorie", "Practically almost fat free", "Butterless of course", "Contains fruit", "Very chewy" and in fact "Healthy for you". Then I heard words poured from heaven. Sweet words worth living a lifetime for! But they came with a price! Having done all that sales pitch (and a very successful one at that! Gee! I was not aware I had a sales limb in my body!), she sure wasn't allowing me to take my pictures, however quick and watch drooling heavily on the side. So, finally - That's my explanation for lousy pictures! Phew! That's the longest excuse you can ever hear from anyone ;) But the taste - take it from - is 'gotto to make it again' types. You will love it. I flicked this recipe from my colleague who is on an everlasting diet and looks like a million bucks even on a bad hair day! Grrrrrrrr.......
  • Cook time:
  • Prep time:
  • Yields: Makes about 9-12 pieces
Ingredients
  • 5 tbsp cocoa
  • 1 tbsp superfine sugar
  • 5 tbsp low fat milk
  • 3 large bananas (slimy ripe ones work so well...)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 5 egg whites
  • 3/4 cup self-rising flour
  • 2/3 cup oat bran
  • powdered sugar for dusting, optional
Tips
* No Oat bran on hand? Substitute your fav. nuts like walnut/pecans instead for the chewiness. * Usually silken tofu as a substitute for eggs works esp. well in brownies than in any other baked products.
Method
1. Line an 8inch square cake pan with a parchment paper. I cut out two thick strips. placed them cross wise so that its easier for me to remove the brownie later.
2. Blend the cocoa, super sugar with the milk.
3. Beat the egg whites lightly and then add it to the cocoa mixture
4. Mash the bananas well.
5. Add the banana, brown sugar and vanilla extract.
6. Sift the flour over the mixture.
7. Fold in the Oat bran.
8. Pour it into the prepared pan.
9. Bake for about 40 minutes in a preheated 350F oven, until firm.
10. Cool in the pan for about 10 minutes and then cut it out into squares.
Dust it with powdered sugar if you like and enjoy :) Low Calorie Banana Chocolate Brownie Recipe

great recipe :) what can be the substitute for egg?

By Sudha on Jan 21, 2014

Great recipe.! I tried it today with my girls and they liked it immensely. Made a few changes....reduced the brown sugar to 3/4 cup, added 2 full eggs instead of 5 egg whites, Added flax seeds too to increase the healthy quotient!! And added whole oats - didn't have the bran The bananas lend a wonderful flavour!! Should try this using wheat flour.

Could you use oatmeal instead of oat bran?

By VANESSA on Sep 19, 2012

This looks amazing! I want to try it, but don't have oat bran and my husband has a tree nut allergy, do walnuts won't work (for him--I LOVE walnuts in baked goods, especially brownies). So, I am wondering what else I can use? I have chia seeds and wheat germ. Would either of these work? Thanks for the lovely recipe. I'm looking forward to your reply so I can get these made

:-? I see where others have commented on the calories per serving. I apologize for not seeing that earlier when I posted a question.

Hey loved the recipe just curious how many calories in a small piece?

By Heena on Jul 3, 2012

Hi, This is the first recipe I tried from ur website..though it taste quite good but if u talk about texture quite sticky..can u tell m d reason..yes I replaced Oat Bran vid Bananas..but i am sure this is not the reason...Please answer my query. Many Thanks!

I personally think it IS indeed the reason. Oat bran is dry while Bananas are wet. So when you add more wet ingredient, it naturally would be stickier. --DK

Brownie Recipe with oats sounds interesting! Eager to give a try.

By rairai on Feb 11, 2012

:-D Just made these - I had an army of frozen bananas and this recipe sounded worth a try! They are GREAT! I love the bran, and the chocolate.. and the banana keeps it all moist and dense like a brownie! So tasty!

Making this at the moment. Have substituted the brown sugar with Splenda as counting calories. smells yum! If cut into 9 then 153 calories each or into 12 then 115. Thanks for the recipe!

I came across your site tonight when looking for a healthier Brownie recipe... I love Bananas so this was a great fit. I ended up making my own self rising flour by adding 1/4 tsp. Salt and 1 tsp. of Baking Powder. For my milk I used Almond Milk. I also substituted Sucanat for the brown sugar... The one extra treat... I added were tiny chocolate chips (non dairy) I really love how this recipe turned out and I'm glad I found this site. Thank you very much... Dawn

Hi The receipe looks amazing.I had a question:If we just want to make choclate brownies do we follow the same reciepe minus the bananas? Thanks Poonam

Since the recipe is built around bananas as its main ingredient I am not sure how well it will work out without them. But I have another recipe for making chocolate brownies without bananas. Will post that soon :) --DK

Hi, how long can I store it? Should I keep it in fridge? or is it ok to store at room temperature in air tight container? I am going out to get the ingredients now

You can Store brownies in a tightly covered container, or leave them in the pan and cover tightly with aluminum foil. I stored them covered fridge. They easily keep well for 5-7 days. They also freeze well. Thaw them before serving :)--DK

Can I call this Outstanding Healthy Brownie. I will enjoy it visually and savor it virtually until I am done with my Phase 1 of South beach diet.

By Jalpa on Apr 2, 2010

Hey, its lovely and most important its so easy to make... but can you give an option instead of egg, since we are vegetarian, so cant use them...

Try using silken tofu or applesauce. It might work well for the brownies. Or just add more bananas to substitute the eggs --DK

Whats wrong with your photos? I think they are mouth watering and makes one want to grab one from your plate. I think you have achieved what this brownie was supposed to achieve. I am amazed with people who take step-by-step photos of the recipes. I know its not an easy thing to do unless you have some one behind you to help you. Good job!

What can we use instead of oat bran? I have not heard of that before..

If u live in the USA, then def. try to get your hands on the oat bran in your local health stores! Worth it for nutrition and adding amazing chewiness to your baked goods. Otherwise just substitute nuts for it since they will also provide the chewiness in this brownie :) --DK

Looks like a brilliant recipe, but being diabetic, i'm a bit concerned about the sugars; can I substitute Splenda? and will soy milk work alright? thanks!!!

Delicious......can we replace with maida instead of Self rising flour?

yes you can but you will have to add some salt and soda to the batter. I have added a link to my substitute page for the flour in the ingredients list. Hope that helps :) --DK
