ukaDiiChe modak, are supposedly,prepared on first day of Ganesh Chaturthi.In marathi steaming is called ukdne....that"s why this sweet steamed rice dumplings are called "Ukdiche Modak"

Ingredients
  • For the cover:
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1-14 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
  • For the filling:
  • 1 cup fresh coconut (grated)
  • 1/2 cup jaggery (grated)
  • 2 tablespoon poppy seeds (roasted)
  • 6-8 cashew nuts (chopped)
  • 10 golden raisins
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • few stands of saffron
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • For Serving:
  • Pure melted ghee
Method
1.

For the filling:In a non stick pan heat ghee,add the coconut and the jaggery.Stir until it blends completely.

Add remaining ingredients,cool ,make small balls and keep aside.

For the cover:In a deep vessel add water ,salt and ghee and and when it starts boiling then slowly add the rice flour, stirring to prevent any lumps from forming.

Cool the mixture, and then knead into a smooth dough.Make small balls and in a greased mold keep the dough,add filling ball and shape it .

5.

In a greased steaming plate,keep modak and steam for 15-17 minutes or till done...Serve HOT with melted ghee on top....Off course after Pooja:)

Note:
If wish you can make variation to the stuffing or outer cover,this one is traditional.
