Best Chickpeas guacamole/Dip recipe
I love foods that are delicious, no doubt. But I think its a food lover's success if that food consumed helps to enhance his/her health in the process too. Although I am not really finicky about enjoying all kinds of foods (I am talking obviously of "fried stuff"), I like to keep them in the lower rung of the food ladder. And that's only cos they are nutritionally lacking. I would rather prefer to exercise the calories out than abstain from it (  I said I "prefer" and not that "I am doing something about it". You can lower those eyebrows now Mr. Husband!)
Best Chickpeas guacamole/Dip recipe
Remember the fresh chickpeas I talked about in my Subz Polo post? After that recipe, I tried this one and loved it. I love avocado for their nutrition (and good fats) and I had already fallen in love with these emerald beauties. Putting them together sounded like a darn good idea and it so is. Its so easy peasy to make and makes for a great finger food. They are hearty and fresh tasting.
  • Cook time:
  • Prep time:
  • Serves: 2 people
  • Yields: 3 cups
Ingredients
  • 2 cups fresh green shelled chickpeas
  • 1 ripe (large) avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 1 cup loosely packed chopped fresh cilantro
  • ½ cup minced white onion
  • 1 jalapeno, seeded (for less heat) and minced
  • 1 lime/lemon, juiced
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/2 cup of finely chopped  tomatoes and cilantro for garnish (optional)
Method
1. I steamed the fresh chickpeas in my bamboo steamer
2. for about 6-8 minutes until vibrant green. You can alternatively boil them for about 2-3 minutes.
3. Next add these to a food processor along with salt, lemon (or lime) juice and cilantro
4. Puree until smooth.
5. Remove from the processor and blend in the remaining cilantro, Avocado, onion,  and jalapeno. You can also puree the avocado along with chickpeas like I did for a smooth consistency. Otherwise just blend it along with rest of the ingredients to the chickpeas puree for a chunkier version.
Transfer to a serving bowl. I garnished it with tomatoes (for color) , onions (for crunch) and little more cilantro leaves (cos I like them!). We enjoyed them along with tortillas, another time with our tacos and yet another time simply with baked tortilla chips Best Chickpeas guacamole/Dip recipe

[...] Googled “fresh chickpeas” and was intrigued to find them used in hummus and guacamole, fried or charred in their pods – Yum! But for the first time I made fresh chickpeas, I wanted to [...]

Dk, Quick question? is it a must to add avacado for this recipe or just use the fresh chickpeas. if you could tell me soon that would be great. planning to do this for tonights dinner. Thanks Priya Naveen

Well its a guacamole, hence the addition does add great deal of body to it. I personally havent tried it without avacado, so do not have an idea. If u r trying without it, wud luv to know what you think of it --DK

Hi, DK! Thanks for posting this. I've found fresh chickpeas finally this season while at the market a day before The Fourth of July, though they were priced at a premium. I was fortunate to get one of the last bunches of fresh cilantro, too, at the same time. Now after checking in at your web pages, I'm about to make The DK's Fresh Chickpea Quacamole. [ By the time the fresh chickpeas reached a nearby market, they weren't as young and tender perhaps as the ones used in your recipe. So I gave them more time cooking in order to develop their flavor. Since green peas have been growing on my urban balcony, it has become more obvious to me how their taste is affected by how long they've been on the "vine" and by their freshness. Thus an adjustment of the cooking time.

Wow - I see these fresh chick peas in my market quite often but never thought I could make such a beautiful guac with it. I'll pick it up the next time and will try this out. Looks super pretty!

Bravo, and more, DK! I am taking this one in with my eyes now: cilantro, peas( freshly steammed ), onions, peppers, tomatoes, avocadoes, lemon ... I have some alfalfa sprouts to go on top of it all at the very end. I haven't given up, I will enquire again at the market today for the green chickpeas, and I'll look for a good bunch of cilantro, too. [I think it may be well worth it to plant both next spring: ojala que! b'ezrat hashem!imshallah!.]

Hi DK, It is very nice of you to allow others to post their recipes, but please change the layout, it is a bit confusing all the recipes are in the same page. At least keep your newly posted recipe on top until you post the next one. Thank you

I love guacamole! Adding fresh chick peas to it makes this dish even more perfect! Shelling chick peas is a drag but well worth it. Do you have any technique for shelling besides doing it one by one? Cheers, Heguiberto

Love that bamboo steamer of yours. And yes that shelling seems like a lot of work but as you said those fresh chickpeas are really pretty and inviting.
