Idli Finger fries recipe | Leftover Idly Recipe Ideas
Visit any South Indian's house and 95% of the time, you will find a big container of either Idli batter or Dosa batter (or both). I happen to find myself in the remaining 5%. Until a year back, Idli was not a common breakfast in my home. The main reason - My husband. No, he loves Idlis but for a self inflicted goal of some % of protein on a day to day diet, Idli caused quite an issue. Hence I hardly made it. I revisited it on and off when the desire and craving for home arose. Idlis for some weird reason helped to satisfy that need.

But whenever I made it, the husband made sure to insist that we leave around 4-5 as leftovers. Why? So that I can make these :) He would go to the extent of forcing me to make idlis (when I had the batter) just so that when done, I could fry them up for weekend snacks. That's how much he loved these itsy bitsy and extremely crunchy finger fries. They are addictive, a boon when idlis are made on regular basis and you get leftovers (esp. with kids around!). Of course, there are few other ways how you can use up leftover idlis but have to say that these are outright winners in my house.
  • Cook time:
  • Prep time:
  • Serves: 4 people
  • Yields: I used 4 idlis and got around 30 pieces.
Ingredients
Method
1. Slice the Idlis into thin fingers. I usually get around 7-8 fingers from one idli but it would depend on the size of your idlis.
2. Heat some oil for deep frying in a pan.  Drop them when the oil is hot. You need it to be med-high heat.
3. Turn them in about 1 minute when it turns reddish brown.
4. Remove when its golden all around.
5. Drain excess oil on paper towels. If fried right, you would hardly see any oil in the paper. Sprinkle some chilli powder, garam masala or idli chutney powder or any other seasoning you like. We like it plain and hence I don't add any.
Serve warm with any accompaniment of your choice. We love it with Coconut Chutney, Spicy hot red Chutney or at times with ketchup. Idli Finger fries recipe | Leftover Idly Recipe Ideas

it was so nice.

I made this for two days in a row as snacks for my kids and their friends. They loved this version of fries. Normally idli was becoming boring for them. This version is much more tastier. Anything fried even though not that healthy is always a favourite for us.

Wanted to take a picture but it was gone before I could reach a camera.

By Cilantro on Dec 22, 2011

Amma made them for evening snack for us but it did consume lot of oil and hence I do not make them but its ok to have once in a while and it does taste awesome.

If fried right, it does not retain oil. Make sure the oil temp is med-high. Please refer this for further details http://culinaryarts.about.com/od/dryheatcooking/a/deepfrying.htm

I belong in the 5% group too. We almost never have idlis, dosa maybe sometimes. I would love this crunchy idli anytime though. So tempting!
