Misal is a nutritious Maharashtrian Dish. It is a spicy curry made with sprouted pulses and served topped with sweet and spicy chutney and spicy chivda. This spicy curry served with bread is called Pav. Traditionally usal is made with sprouted math beans, but I make it with a varietly of pulses....:)

Ingredients
  • For Sprouting:
  • 1/2 cup mung beans
  • 1/2 cup moth beans
  • 1/4 cup Dried Green Peas
  • 1/4 cup Dried White Peas
  • 1/4 cup whole black gram
  • For Masala:
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 4 peppercorns
  • 4 whole red chillies
  • 2 teaspoon dry coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoons cumin seeds
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
  • 2 teaspoons fennel seeds
  • 2 teaspoon dried coconut (shredded)
  • For Curry:
  • 2 tablespoon oil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/4 asafoetida powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 cup Peanuts
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 cup fresh coconut (scraped)
  • 1 teaspoon tamarind pulp
  • 3 cup water
  • For Serving:
  • Pav-as needed
  • Dry potato bhaji (as we usually made like that only)-as needed
  • Date tamarind chutney-as needed
  • Coriander chutney-as needed
  • Red onions (finely chopped-as needed
  • tomatoes (chopped)-as needed
  • Green chillies (finely chopped)-as needed
  • Fresh coriander leaves (chopped)-as needed
  • Spicy Chivda-as needed
Method
1.

For Sprouts:
Soak all the above pulses in 4 cups of water overnight.Drain and spread the pulses on a wet cotton cloth.Loosley wrap the cloth around them and store it for 12-24 hours, depending on the size of the sprouts you want.(If the cloth seems to dry out, spray some water)Then blanch them in salty water,keep aside.

For Masala:
In a pan dry roast all ingredients and cool and coarsely grind it,keep aside.

For Curry:
In a pan heat oil and add all ingredients except water,one by one and swat in between.Add masala powder and swat for a min or till aroma arise,add water and bring to boil.(this gravy must belittle bit thin )

4.

For Misal:
In a bowl add some dry potato bhaji.
Over it add some blanched sprouts.
Over this pour some curry.
Over this spoon little bit both chutneys as per your liking.
Over this sprinkle chopped tomatoes.
Over this sprinkle some chopped onions.
Over this sprinkle coriander leaves.
Over this sprinkle lots of spicy chivda.
Serve with Pav,Without roasting.....YUM.:)

NOTE:If wish one can add yogurt too on it.

NOTE:Traditionally this dish is very spicy likeall Maharashtrian dish,but adjust heat acc to your choice.

NOTE:This dish is protein,mineral & vitamins rich,so do make for children but avoid chillies then just add chat masala and cumin powder for taste.
